This is the final video of the mixing and mastering mini-series with Nik Hotchkiss and Alex Zepeda. Nik finalizes the series with an overview of how he approaches mastering within the box using various plugins from izotope, plugin alliance and fabfilter Pro Q3.
In this video Nik adds effects to the percussion of the track by bringing out certain accent patterns in a subtle manner using a mixture of native and 3rd part reverb plugins. Furthermore, automation clips were added with basic eq plugins with the intention of making the track transition more smoothly. And lastly, Nik does a quick mix down with faders with the addition of using ozone advance to work on transients and the overall tone of the track.
FOTW W/Nik Hotchkiss as he continues to mix Music Alliance community coordinator Alex Zepeda’s Hip/Hop track. In this video, Nik shows us some secret sauce on how to make trap snares in your track have more bounce, how to pan certain elements to widen the mix, automation clips to bring out certain frequencies to make synthesizers pop, and much more!
In this special FOTW, Luca remasters a track for Diplo and shows us the techniques he used to make the track stand out even more. Luca Masters in the box by utilizing plugins such as Fab Filter Pro Q 3, Fabfilter Saturn 2, Fabfilter Pro C 2, Solid State Logic’s SSL X-Phase, Kazrog and several other amazing plugins to make the track shine.
Taylin and Das Nasty dive into perfecting the drop on one of Das Nasty’s new tracks by enhancing the stereo imaging with various advance techniques within Ableton. Not to mention in this FOTW Taylin also explains his process on how to use LFO Tool and Transient Shaper to mix the kick with the rest of the track without interfering with other important low mid frequencies in the buildup.
Taylin Simmonds shares his work on a new dance EP track. How to beef up and make sounds bigger thicker warmer more powerful while still have them fit the mix and work around the other elements. Secondly, he deals with bass lines that need to be beefed up and add layers, but there is no midi. Normally, with midi, you can just duplicate and load up more serum patches, omnisphere, etc. Taylin gets into his process for adding stereo width and additional layers just working off the audio files.
What do you do if the song just isn’t working, the drop just doesn’t have the power?
How do you work around the kik and drums to have a really powerful bass, hitting constantly in the track comparable to other professionally produced records, but also keep with the intended feel of the track? Taylin says, “this is something I run into all the time when I am producing … so we’re going to use a technique called multiband sidechaining to make this drop work today.”
